restaurant in kansas city after a natural gas explosion just blew it apart right before the evening rush. witnesses said the blast sounded like thunder and felt like an earthquake with a force so great it knocked out windows blocks away. flames from the massive four-eye hrarp four-alarm fire soared high into the night sky leaving 14 people injured and left two unaccounted for. one of them was found, is being treated in the hospital. firefighters with cadaver dogs are trying to locate another person, a woman who worked at jj's restaurant. >> we've been in contact with jimmy francey the owner. his first concern was not the restaurant, or the 27 years he's been in business but the people who worked with him in that business for a number of years and their safety. he was out of town and heading back into town when we first talked to him. jenna: mike tobin is live in san cast city missouri with more on this. mike, what is happening there now? >> reporter: i can step out of the way and let a cameraman zoom in so i can show you the primary activity going on here in the morning. what you see mos

to the southeast of new york city and eventual towards southeastern sections of new england and intensify as it goes by. good news, new indications are it will be a little weaker than we were thinking and also a little further south and east. as you look at the forecast into tomorrow, it's just rain for the big city, philly, new york, mix of rain and snow in providence and hartford. into boston. and then it continues o advance with heavier snow to fall in central ex ises of new england and then that storm moves along and pulls out of the way early next week. it will still leave a sizable amount of about three or six inches to boston. two or three in hartford. the old storm is still causing snow across the northern plains states. a swath from the u.p. of michigan into wisconsin. just when that was out, look what's diving into the pacific northwest. another storm that will dive across the rockies and produce snow from there on into the plains states into early next week. >> shepard: nick gregory from wnyw. thank you. passengers on a flight that landed in cleveland got a scare when the plane

a big city like manhattan, right? >> of course. it's a shock wave, basically. the physics of it is it hits the earth's atmosphere and feels like a brick wall to it. because of how fast it is moving. and when you hit a brick wall you basically explode. that's what happened here. exploded in midair. that shock wave shatters glass or anything sort of fragile and breakable over a huge radius. remember the oklahoma city bomb that destroyed the building it hit, but of course much glass was broken in the surrounding area. that's the effect of a shock wave air blast of an explosion of this kind. >> this seems to have come without warning. is this the sort of thing that scientists aren't able to detect in the atmosphere? >> yeah. below a certain size asteroid, they come in without warning. exactly. above a certain size, a radar can detect them. the military certainly has a smaller threshold for what they can see coming in. by the time you see them coming in, there's no defense against them. something this size is not going to render the human species exstint. something large enough

better the temperature in new york city, 37 degrees and it's actually going to be mild across the northeast all the way down to florida. florida is going to be seeing highs into the 80s across southern parts of the state. 76 in the city of tampa, new york city, 46 degrees for high temperature. take a look at portions of the upper midwest. it will be cold day. minneapolis, high temperature is only going to be 3 degrees. that is warm as it is going to get. you factor in the wind and windchill at the moment north central are frigid. it feels like 35 below zero in fargo. we do have a storm system that is impacting portions of great lakes down to the southeast with areas of heavier rain but overall this system is going to be quick mover. doesn't have a lot of moisture. snowfall amounts in the studio that are going to be relatively lighted where you see the white during the morning hours, otherwise portions of maine could see up to ten inches of snow. that is where we have the winter storm winning. out in west, stormy weather expected. we have a new storm that is going to be impacti

alvin taylor helped us video it with a cell phone. chlorine. what the city is using to flush the hotel's entire water system after the gruesome discovery of a woman's body inside one of the rooftop tanks that may have been there for as long as two and a half weeks. four tanks connect to the hotel's drinking supply and during those weeks hundreds of residents and hotel guests had been using it. >> it really turns my stomach. a lot of people have left and went to another hotel. just the thought of it for so long. >> reporter: the woman inside the tank 21-year-old elisa lam. the tourist from vancouver, canada, arrived on january 26. surveillance video shows her acting oddly inside the hotel elevator as if she is hiding from someone, but this woman says lam didn't seem odd at all when they met. >> she was very outgoing, very lively, very friendly. >> reporter: orphan is the manager of a bookstore around the corner from the hotel called the last bookstore. one of the last places lam was seen by anyone as she bought records and presents for her parents and sister. >> talking about what books
